Patchwork Sweater | Crochet with Me

02/09/2021

Join me in crocheting a patchwork sweater. I will let you know how I did it, and I hope this inspires you to crochet too!

What I Used

I used 11.5 skeins size 6 yarn (Bernat Softee Chunky) and a size 6 hook. It is also helpful to have a yarn needle. I recommend using a thinner yarn because my sweater ended up being quite stiff.

Making the Squares

I made 62 squares, half dark and half light blue. They were 14 by 15 stitches (4.25" by 5"). The sweater I am making has two body pieces consisting of 15 squares (3 by 5) and the sleeves composed of 16 squares (4 by 4). You can adjust this as you please and thus recalculate the number of squares you make. I recommend measuring one of your favorite sweaters or making one square and then planning out how many more you need.

Connecting the Squares

I started by doing them in strips: connecting 4 squares (8 needed) for the sleeves and connecting 5 squares (6 needed) for the body. I did this by using my yarn needle to sew them together so that they lay flat when finished. Once you have made your strips, you can line them up and sew them together too. After doing so, I recommend sewing the shoulder by attaching one square on the top of each side of both the body pieces. Next, you can attach the sleeves by lining up the center seam and attaching. Next, you can sew up the side of the body and down the sleeve to finish your sweater's shape.

Finishing Touches

Finally, you can finish the edges. For the neck and bottom, I did a single crochet around the opening, then a reduction (one stitch for every two), and then ended with another single crochet. On the sleeves, I only did one row of single crochet around the opening.

Ultimately, I hope this was helpful, and you have fun with your next crochet project.
